While E3 2021 may be over,Call of Dutyfans know that there’s still at least one big announcement left to make this summer. 2021’s annualCall of Dutygame has yet to be revealed, but it’s just a matter of time. In the time being, fans are enjoying all of the rumors and speculation about what could be in development. They’re also offering up ideas and hopes for what they like to see, such as one popular Reddit post asking for customizable scorestreaks to return.
A user on Reddit made a post showing a screenshot taken fromCall of Duty: Advanced Warfarewith the title, “Why have we never seen customizable scorestreaks since AW?” The Reddit post made in theBlack Ops Cold Warsubreddit has accrued over 1,000 upvotes, a large amount for the smallerCall of Dutycommunity, as well as over 250 comments. Custom scorestreaks are not a common feature inCall of Dutygames whatsoever. The feature was implemented inCall of Duty: Advanced Warfareand grew popular there. Since then, however, the feature hasn’t been brought back. The closest it’s been since is withCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which featured scorestreak variants. These, however, were significantly less popular, as they couldn’t be earned through normal means.
It’s understandable why custom scorestreaks haven’t been brought back, too, as interesting as the feature seems on paper. It’s already challenging to balance scorestreaks inannualCall of Dutygamesas it is, let alone with so many different variables to take into consideration. The variant scorestreaks system was supposed to pare down some of the possibilities, but had its own flaws.Call of Dutygames since have explored different ways of offering options to players.
The comments in the Reddit thread are sympathetic to both the thread creator andCall of Duty’s developers. Some point out it would take a lot of effort to do, while others say innovating is a part of the process. Others say that it would take effort, only as an insult, insinuatingCall of Dutydevelopers aren’t looking to put that kind of work into options forCall of Dutygames anymore.
For the most part, the replies are very much in agreement with the sentiment, however. There are several comments talking about their favorite scorestreak customizations, including wall-hackingUAVsand more. While it’s not impossible that the nextCall of Dutygame could feature customizable scorestreaks, fans probably shouldn’t get their hopes up. For now, it seems like nostalgia will have to do.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfarewas originally released for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
